Elephants on the Garden Route

Crags Elephants

When I am travelling through South Africa, surrounded by rolling hills, sparse bushveld and golden plains, I like to imagine what the country must have looked like to the indigenous inhabitants and foreign settlers. Herds of buck and zebra moving through the brush, lions lazing in the shade and, of course, the magnificent African elephant thundering peacefully through the countryside. I recently read a book about elephants, the Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony. A true story that made me laugh, cry and feel like I had a special insight into these wondrous animals’ lives and behaviour. Do yourself a favour … Continue reading

Mother’s Day Breakfast-in-Bed

Mom's Flower

We had a tradition in my family: on Mother’s Day, my Mom had to stay in bed until my sister and I (with the patient help of my Dad) had prepared a breakfast tray and morning tea to be enjoyed in bed. Since Mother’s Day falls in May in South Africa, the mornings can be a bit chilly (in comparison to the rest of the year) and I remember one of us having to slip into the garden for a flower for the tray every year. We would then traipse through to their bedroom singing “Happy Mother’s Day” and all … Continue reading

The Shark Debate

White Shark

The shark debate has been raging for years now and, due to the upsetting events over the last year, this debate has become more and more heated along the South African coast. I just want to say that this is my opinion – I am no expert in sharks, statistics or shark behaviour. I have thought extensively about my opinion on this subject. My heart breaks for those who have lost loved ones to a shark bite. Having said that, I cannot ignore what we are doing to sharks as a species. So here goes. Let me take you back … Continue reading

A walk on the Wildside

The Archway

Follow my blog with Bloglovin Now it is quite obvious that I love almost everything about Plett. My current passion is exploring all the hikes and walks in the Garden Route and it’s going to take a while! But this little secret spot that we visited last weekend is going to keep a special place in my ♥. It has quite a few names, but I can tell you this… it is on the wild side of Plettenberg Bay, out behind the airport. It is known as Stilbaai (Calm Bay or Quiet Bay in Afrikaans) or The Shack (which creates … Continue reading

Reef Review: Jacob’s Poort

Colourful Reef

I have spent a lot of my time scuba diving in Plettenberg Bay and a frequently asked question was: “Why Plett? Why not go somewhere more tropical?” The truth is – I love diving in Plett (you could say I heart it ). The unexpected colours and creatures make the diving more varied, the topography of both the surrounding mountains and the reefs underwater is always breathtaking and, if I had to choose a favourite, Jacob’s Poort would be it. The reef is characterised by a pinnacle rising from about 13m to within 5m of the surface. The walls of … Continue reading

5 Ideas for a Fish Braai

Fishing Fun 003 FB

Living along the Western Cape coast of South Africa means that we have fresh fish and seafood readily available. Plus, being a coastal community, fish should and can be a part of our healthy food choices. A braai is a South African weekend pastime, so I can think of few things better on a weekend, than a roaring fire, good friends and family and trading some of that red meat for white. Here are 5 suggestions for creating a mouth watering fish dish. 1)         Root Underground fish (this one is a family recipe) The idea is to cook the fish … Continue reading

Land Art: Site_Specific Bitou 2011

Artmoeders by Simon Max Bannister

Land Art Event in Plettenberg Bay/Bitou a huge success and a wonderful surprise! Could there be a better place to launch a book on land art than the Beacon Isle Hotel. The iconic hotel is an architectural artwork in itself and the hotel hosted the launch of a documentary book about the Land Art Event that took place in Plettenberg Bay last year. Site_Specific explains that “discipline of Land Art uniquely combines culture and nature in a manner that brings art to the community’s landscape thus it has the potential to transform communities’ and individuals’ perceptions of themselves, each other, … Continue reading

Surf and Dive – Plettenberg Bay

Surf and Dive

There are many activities to be enjoyed in and around the sea, but two of the most popular must be surfing and scuba diving. Scuba divers explore the reefs and wrecks below the waves with enthusiasm and curiosity; as this underwater realm is so different from our terrestrial one. Divers immerse themselves in a silent, weightless world filled with life and colour. Each coastal region is unique and Plettenberg Bayis known for reefs covered in vibrant soft coral, anemones and sponges. The diverse marine life includes rays, shysharks, seals, many species of reef fish and nudibranchs. This biodiversity is beyond … Continue reading

Adventure Boat – Plettenberg Bay

1169

Sitting on the boat, I can’t help feeling a bit apprehensive. There is nothing but the ocean before us, waves breaking onto the shore and vast open water behind them.  At a word from the skipper, the launch vehicle, which is behind the boat, begins to drive directly at the breakers! This original way of launching boats is called dolly launching and entails a tractor driving a boat and trailer directly at the sea and then slamming on the brakes. The boat continues onto the water, leaving the trailer behind. Once the boat hits the water, I feel calmer – … Continue reading
